Cape Town Facts & Tips

Cape Town is a winter rainfall region

Unlike the rest of the country, the Cape Town area, and the entire Western Cape, is a winter rainfall region. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the South African winter stretches from about mid-May to mid-September. During this winter period, the rainfall significantly increases with storms lasting up to several days with anything from mild sprinkles to torrential downpours. That said, should your visit coincide with winter, bring along your rain gear.

  • Driving is on the left side of the road
  • It's Petrol, not gasoline and diesel is widely available
  • Petrol Stations do not accept Credit Cards, always have cash to pay
  • Main roads are excellent, secondary roads are for the most part good but some may be gravel or dirt in remote areas
  • Car guards will offer to watch your car while you go about your business. A polite thank you will do. On your return give the guard ZAR 2 during the day and ZAR 5 in the evening and thank them.
