Cape Town is a winter rainfall region

Unlike the rest of the country, the Cape Town area, and the entire Western Cape, is a winter rainfall region. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the South African winter stretches from about mid-May to mid-September. During this winter period, the rainfall significantly increases with storms lasting up to several days with anything from mild sprinkles to torrential downpours. That said, should your visit coincide with winter, bring along your rain gear.

Gateway Backpackers Ermelo is conveniently situated en-route to Kruger National Park from Kwa-zulu Natal, Free State, Swaziland, Southern Mocambique. We have an African theme to the Backpackers' home where you can sit around the barbeque fire; drink a glass of wine; make new friends and recount the adventures that you have been on.

Relax in front of the tv or grab a book from our shelf and catch up on some reading. Shoot some pool or take on your friends in a game of table soccer.

For the more adventurous type book Game drives with us, Quad biking, Horse riding, Paint ball/ war games, Hiking or we could have your desire fulfilled to learn more of the local history.

PS. Gateway Backpackers and Ermelo is situated at exactly 30 deg. Eastern Longtitude on the International map. Longtitude and latitude are the lines by which position, date, and most importantly, time are calculated. The significance of the 30 deg.
