Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa. It was first mentioned by the famous explorer Bartolomeu Dias in the late 15th century. After Jan van Riebeeck and his crew for the Dutch East India Company established the first European settlement in South Africa, the town became an important European outpost and trading post for the Dutch East India Company. Although the area was inhabited for thousands of years prior to the arrival of the Europeans, there is no recorded history of local activities of the Khoi and their predecessors.

The Flower trails and hiking routes as well as whales, dolphins and seals all make for exciting outings. The West Coast Fossil Park and the West Coast National Park are a must visit. Bird life is of particular interest too. Horse riding is available and Saldanha boasts an International Diving School. Game reserves are nearby and malaria free. Fishing plays a major role in industry, both for leisure and livelihood and the harbor has world-renowned facilities.
