Cape Town Facts & Tips

Cape Town is a winter rainfall region

Unlike the rest of the country, the Cape Town area, and the entire Western Cape, is a winter rainfall region. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the South African winter stretches from about mid-May to mid-September. During this winter period, the rainfall significantly increases with storms lasting up to several days with anything from mild sprinkles to torrential downpours. That said, should your visit coincide with winter, bring along your rain gear.

Cape Winelands Tour & Sightseeing in Cape Town

Cape Winelands Tour - Cape Winelands

Cape Winelands

CONSTANTIA REGION
A tour through the oldest wine region in the country is very rewarding. Start this journey from the grandest of the Cape Dutch homesteads, Groot Constantia, the classic wine estate with its manor-house, cellars and vineyards. The home is a fascinating blend of the west, East and Africa and the wines recognised world wide.

STELLENBOSCH REGION
We then take a half-hour drive from Cape Town to our second oldest wine region and producer of some of the most well-known wines of South Africa.
Of all the towns founded in the Cape during the period of control of the Dutch East India Company, this is the best preserved town. Stellenbosch has become known as "the town of oaks" some of which have been proclaimed national monuments.
Walk through historic Dorp Street with many beautiful old buildings - visit the village museum with a collection of 4 houses depicting the history of this university town.
For something different visit the Cheetah Outreach Program & raptor encounters at Spier.

FRANSCHOEK
The French Huguenots settled here in 1688 after leaving France to escape persecution. The quaint village is set in a vale between towering mountains through which flows one of the tributaries of the Berg river and has become renown not only for it's wine but also for its cuisine as some top restaurants in South Africa are to be found here.

FRANSCHOEK REGION
Explore the countryside further by continuing over the mountains along the Franschhoek Pass. From its summit (701m) are superb views, and a dramatic descent to the east winds through a narrow gorge before emerging into a wide basin of lakes & forests surrounded by mountains.

PAARL REGION
The "pearl" of the Berg River Valley, a straggling romantic town built on either side of a 6 kilometre main street, shaded by oaks and jacarandas.
Towering above the town is Paarl Rock or "pearl mountain" - one of the few to have been proclaimed a national monument and the Afrikaans language monument.
KWV cellars, among the largest cellar complexes in the world are to be found in the town.

Winelands and Whale Watching in Hermanus and the Hemel en Aarde Valley
One of the lesser know wine regions along the south coast has the honour to be recognized as the one of the best land-based whale watching areas in the world. Southern Right whales are in our oceans between June and September and can be seen from the shores as they come into the shelter of the bays to mate and calve. Return to the city along the scenic coastal drive and a visit to the Stoney point penguin colony.
