Cape Town Facts & Tips

Cape Town is a winter rainfall region

Unlike the rest of the country, the Cape Town area, and the entire Western Cape, is a winter rainfall region. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the South African winter stretches from about mid-May to mid-September. During this winter period, the rainfall significantly increases with storms lasting up to several days with anything from mild sprinkles to torrential downpours. That said, should your visit coincide with winter, bring along your rain gear.

Hex River
The fertile soils of this intensively cultivated area produce fine, export quality table grapes, and the red hues of the vine leaves, against the backdrop of old Cape Dutch-style houses, makes a spectacular show in summer. The mountains are a favourite with climbers and, often being snow-clad in winter, even sometimes a venue for skiers.

Worcester
The largest town in the Boland lies in a fertile valley below majestic mountain peaks that are often capped with snow in winter. Its Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture rates among the best preserved street complexes in the country. The Karoo botanic garden has a large collection of succulents and vygies that form a blaze of colour in spring and early summer. Step back in time and witness farm activities of bygone days at the open air museum which features live demonstrations of farm cooking, making of soap and candles, tanning, shearing and the distilling of the potent liquor called 'witblits' (white lightning).

Robertson
Reknown both for the breeding of champion racehorses and for the variety of excellent wines produced in the district.

Montagu
The "muscadel capital" is renowned not only for it's fortified sweet wine and other fine wines, but also for fruit production, it's curative hot springs, and many attractive and historic old buildings - some which date back almost to the founding of the town in 1851.

Oudtshoorn
Famous as the capital city of the Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn is the center of a land of scenic contrasts situated in a beautiful area surrounded by mountains on two sides and linked to the garden route by the magnificent Outiniqua pass.
The "feather palaces" of old lend elegance while the Cango caves; one of the world's natural wonders, ostrich show-farms and animal sanctuaries offer a variety of activities.
