Cape Town Facts & Tips

Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa

Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa. It was first mentioned by the famous explorer Bartolomeu Dias in the late 15th century. After Jan van Riebeeck and his crew for the Dutch East India Company established the first European settlement in South Africa, the town became an important European outpost and trading post for the Dutch East India Company. Although the area was inhabited for thousands of years prior to the arrival of the Europeans, there is no recorded history of local activities of the Khoi and their predecessors.

Camps Bay Travel Guide - Cape Town

Camps Bay

Camps Bay is another famous and popular Cape Town beach. The Camps Bay promenade behind the beach is lined with restaurants and cafés making it ideal to grab a bite to eat after a day in the sun. The long white sand beach is a popular photo spot with the Twelve Apostles of Table Mountain behind. Unlike Clifton Beach, Camps Bay is not sheltered from the strong south easterly wind when it blows. Vendors sell drinks, ice cream and other wares on the beach while umbrellas and deck chairs are available for rent. The African sun is very strong so bring plenty of sunscreen, water and beach toys and enjoy a fun day at a beautiful beach during your stay in Cape Town. Enter the water at your own risk, it's cold!
