The beautiful and well-renowned Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens lie on the slopes of Table Mountain in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. It was founded in 1913 to help conserve, preserve and promote the unique flora of South Africa.
The gardens only grow indigenous South African flora including the diverse range from the unique Cape floral kingdom. Over 528 hectares of gardens are home to diverse fynbos flora and forest. An indoor greenhouse displays plants from different regions of the country. The outdoor gardens focus on the Cape floral kingdom.
The gardens hold a visitors' centre, several restaurants, craft markets and during the summer months, popular sunset concerts are held during the week and in particular on Sunday evenings. In addition to this, during the Christmas season, the gardens host the Carols by Candlelight evenings where picnics and carols are held in the evening amongst the beautiful surroundings.
